Downtime and data loss; forum restored

We were down due to the hard drive on our host/server dying. All the data was lost. The latest backup the host had was around Feb. Luckily I had a more recent backup from last month.

So we've had to use that backup. The backup is from 09/01/07, so all we start from there. We'll have to redo any changes since then.

The estimate to recover the hard drive data was a few thousand dollars, so I don't think that'll be happening.

Anyway, I somehow managed to have a forum backup around the same date as the MUD backup. I've restored the forum.

Aren't hosts suppost to back up monthly, weekly or daily?

While it's ideal for the host to keep regular back-ups, it's less common than most folks realize and, frankly, always a good idea to keep your own back-ups anyway, not only in case of problems, but also in case you ever decide to change hosts.
