Ah. Well the first thing you want to do is decide what the theme of it will be, what codebase you'll use, if you have enough time and dedication to do it.

Here's a guide to installing Cygwin:

Read this over about starting a MUD:

Thanks again. And what do you mean by "theme"? Like what it'll be about? .... My stupid side is showing again, isn't it? And how do you set the theme? Is it on the Java link you sent me?

My posted was edited above if you didn't notice.

Yeah, just what it'll be about. Anime? Final Fantasy? Etc.

Um... not to sound negative or anything, but that link you gave me isn't helping much :? It doesn't say anything about coding that I've seen so far, but then again, I may be wrong.

Which link? The first about is about Cygwin, since you said you had trouble installing it.

The second is about if you should even start a MUD. Look at what it says.
Quote:
Reality check: 90% of all the MUD in existence will fail.
90% of the implementers of those MUDs had the same visions.
80% of those implementers failed before they started.

Oh... that's um...

It's not meant to discourage anyone, but just to get people thinking about what they are really getting into.

Ah, well, I think I can work something out. I think I've decided what theme I want. What next? And is this annoying you at all? We've been at this for a while now, lol.

Well now you have a few choices.
1.) Get a pay host.
2.) Find a free host. (Rare to happen)
3.) Run it off Cygwin
4.) Get a Windows codebase. (Hard to compile/coding changes)

I take it 1 is out of the question. I suggest getting Cygwin working and looking for a free host at the same time.

1.Trying to install Cygwin
2.Looking for a free MUD host. (Without much luck)
3.I'm looking at the Linux command list thing (Without much understanding.)

And if I'm not able to find a host at the moment, can I still be working on the MUD for when I find one? One thing I forgot: how much does it cost you to keep IYG up?

If you can get Cygwin working, you can use it to host your own MUD off your computer.

Hmm... would I still have to pay? And would other people be able to play it?

Author:  Zeno [ June 12th, 2005, 12:08 am ]
Post subject:

No, hosting it off your own computer doesn't cost anything. :P

It depends. Most of the time yes, but sometimes if you have a firewall it'll stop others from playing it. Check out these pages:

Well, I think I'll focus on installing Cygwin then  Right now, it's 70% done installing. Last time, it got to 99% then said "Could not finish installation".... Hmm... is there anything more clear about the coding commands? Other than the Linux link you gave me? And where do I start out with the coding? Areas or what?

Those are linux commands, they are used to "navigate". It has nothing to do with coding. Decided on a codebase yet? There's many. Smaug, Rom, Circlemud, Diku, etc. Do a Google for codebases.

To start coding, you'd open a source file (such as in Smaug there's one called act_wiz.c) and edit that.
